Observant meat eaters may have noticed that raw chicken from the store has white stripes in it. According to a new report by the nonprofit Humane League, these pockets of fat are present in 99% of all store-brand chicken sold in the U.S., compared to less than 5% about 10 years ago. The report notes that today’s chickens have more than 200% more fat (and less protein) than chickens did a decade ago. Factory farming where chickens are bred to gain weight rapidly (such that their muscle is replaced with fibrous tissue and fat) appears to be the major culprit. Americans may be especially concerned because they consume more chicken than anyone else in the world.
