Pig Kidneys Successfully Transplanted in Brain-Dead Man

Several surgeons at the University of Alabama at Birmingham successfully transplanted a genetically modified pig’s kidneys into a 57-year-old man on life support. The pig kidneys began working and making urine 23 minutes after they were transplanted. One kidney functioned better than the other. Over 30 million Americans are living with chronic kidney disease, and it disproportionately affects people of color, women, and individuals with low incomes or little education. Some medical professionals believe that genetically modified pig organs could be transplanted to many patients in five year’s time.
